It’s been a very cold winter here in Jacksonville NC this year. I have lived here for over 20 years and I don’t ever remember any winter storm quite like the one named Leon that hit the last week of January. We occasionally get snow, never more than a few inches and they are usually gone in a few hours…..but this ice/sleet/freezing rain event was difficult and challenging for an area that is usually in the 40’s during the winter. We don’t have snow removal equipment, or enough trucks to try and salt or sand the roads. The weather man said prepare like you would for a Hurricane which sent many people running to the store. Thankfully, it was not quite as bad as a Hurricane where you lose power for a couple days or so. But it certainly did shut things down. Everything closed, including the military bases around us. There were at least 2 inches of ice on the streets, along with a dusting of snow. Many people got “cabin fever”, what is it about knowing you can’t really go anywhere or do anything that makes you want to go somewhere?
I think our area did well in preparing and getting people off the roads so we didn’t end up with a situation like they had in Atlanta. With kids stuck at school and people stuck on the highways around the city trying to get home. Hopefully, families took this opportunity to enjoy the unexpected time together and made some wonderful memories. Because every day is a gift and you should treat it that way.
